October 8

Today was my mom's birthday, but Caleb and Daisy had to send Grandma birthday texts since we were still visiting GREAT Aunt Maggie. Today we drove into Chicago so that the kids could experience the big city. Caleb kept getting confused about the name of the Big City - sometimes it was Chicago, sometimes Costco, and sometimes Jericho. Regardless, he knew that he wanted to see the Big City!

And the Big City didn't dissapoint. We happened to plan our trip for the weekend of the Chicago Marathon. Not the best idea. Luckily, we only went into the city the day before the marathon, so things weren't quite as chaotic as they could have been. Plus, it was fun for Chris to relive his marathon experience. (He ran Chicago in 2008 - right around the time we got pregnant with Caleb!)

Since we weren't running the marathon, the weather was perfect - sunny and low 80s. We spent all of our time in the Millennium Park/Lake Shore area.

Our first stop? The giant jellybean.
We knew Caleb would enjoy the Cloudgate sculpture.

Obligatory family photos of our reflection in the bean. Do you see me snuggling Caleb while I snap a photo? Do you see how everyone else is staring at us? I really don't think he was screaming or being obnoxious; I think he was just being cute... I don't remember any screaming, but at this point, it's old hat to me. Who knows.

Our family in the bean.

Chris found a not-so-crowded spot and let Daisy check out her reflection. She wasn't particularly impressed.

Chris' face doesn't really have smudges on it; that's the bean.
Really.

Then we found a fountain. Caleb was really happy. He was even happier when he discovered the pigeons around the fountain. They were pretty fun.

Daisy and I did our usual lounging in the shade while our men hunted some lunch for us.

What did our brave men bring back? Giordano's stuffed pizza. Those bad boys take an hour to bake, so I actually ordered it online with Chris' shiny new phone while we were driving into Chicago. At 11:30, our pizza was ready and waiting. I love technology.

After lunch, we discovered an even better fountain:
One you can play in. Caleb was in heaven.

Do you see the splashes he's making with his foot?

Chris even thought to get Daisy out of the BOB and let her play in the water. Though she looks unimpressed, she was actually really tickled with the whole encounter.

Caleb, saying in his high-pitched talking-to-Daisy voice, "Hiiiiiii, Daiiiisy! Are you splashin?"

Chicago is gorgeous in the fall. Especially when fall feels like summer!

Then we drove back to Maggie's, had naps, and relaxed for the rest of the day.
Maggie even read Caleb some bedtime stories. He is definitely in love with her.
