April 10

What?!?

Mommy's running her half marathon tomorrow?!?

I don't know about this...

April 9

How on earth is my little man NINE months old today?

Every time I nurse him, I think to myself, "He will never again be this small."
He fits so easily in my arms as I hold him and rock him in my soft green chair. He can kick his little feet against the armrest now, but he still fits.
But never again will he be this small.
I'm trying my best to savor every moment.

Right now, he:
Weighs 18 pounds, 7 ounces
Is 28 3/4 inches long
Has just started sleeping through the night - from 8pm to 6am
Takes 2 naps a day, each about 1 1/2 hours
Just learned to clap!
Rolls everywhere instead of crawling
Is really good at pivoting around when he's on his stomach
Can turn himself in circles when he sits on his bottom
Is like a cyclone when we try to change his diaper. That kid will not sit still
Talks all the time
Still nurses 5-6 times a day
Has mastered Cheerios, but doesn't get the concept of swallowing solids

Is so curious!

April 8

Ugh. I am not feeling well today.
I think this season, my allergies may get the best of me. Either that, or aliens have taken over my sinus cavities. Whatev.

Poor Caleb is a little sniffly too, so when he woke up from his afternoon nap after only 30 minutes (a rarity lately!), I brought him into bed with me, hoping MAYBE we could snuggle and nap together.

Sometimes I can be so foolish.

Instead, we played in my bed. Not a nap, but almost as fun.

This is Caleb's curious face.
This face says, "I see something over there, and it looks interesting. I might like to put it in my mouth. How can I get it to my mouth?"

Just sticking out his tongue, for no good reason.

His hair was extra crazy today. It looked like that when he sat up, too. Gravity has nothing on this kid's hair. We love it.

And so I didn't get a nap. Maybe he'll let me sleep tonight.

April 7

These sunshiny, warm days are miraculous.

Exhibit A:
Day 2 of yardwork

Caleb is so happy to play by himself while I weed and dig. We listen to music; I sing while he plays with his toys or just watches.

He likes motorcycles
 and big trucks
 and big kids on scooters
 and dogs that bark.

He also likes to clap. That's what he's doing here.

When he woke up from his first nap of the day, I heard him babbling on the monitor. I smiled to myself, and gave him a few minutes to wake up. Then I heard clapping. My baby was lying in his crib, clapping all by himself.

What a sweetheart!

April 6

Today was a happy day, involving sunshine, visits with friends, voting, a two and a half hour nap (for Caleb, not me), and pinwheels.

Need I say more?

April 5

We had a great day today.

Surprisingly, it all began with a doctor appointment. Caleb had his 9-month checkup, and got 2 shots. He took them like a champ, and was cheerful the moment the nurse was done sticking him.  He is such a good baby!

It was such a lovely day that I decided to attempt some long-overdue yardwork. I neglected my plants all last summer because I was either morbidly pregnant or recovering from childbirth or distracted by learning how to be a mom.

So I have a big task ahead of me. Luckily, I have this little helper at my side:
How sweet is he?
I spread out a blanket, slathered him in sunscreen, filled a basket of toys, and cued up the iPod for this endeavor. It was largely successful - I was able to spend 45 full minutes digging up dandelions and errant grass before Caleb decided he was done. Unfortunately, I'll need at least 5 more sessions like this to accomplish what must be done. But it will happen!

Then, we went inside and Caleb rolled around in his room. I'm not entirely sure how this happened, but it's pretty funny:

That greenish-gray thing by Caleb's hand is my swivel-glider, and he is under his crib. I'm pretty sure he spent a solid 10 minutes working to get under here by wiggling and rolling, wiggling and rolling. It was really funny.

April 4

Caleb's first Easter was the best day ever.

It got off to a great start when Caleb slept in until 8:15. That's unheard of in these parts.

After church, Caleb was delightfully compliant and took a two-hour nap so that Chris and I could finish preparing for Easter lunch with both of our families. He cheerfully woke up right as they started arriving, and basked in their attention for the next few hours.

Caleb got to open up gifts in his Easter basket

and roll around  on the floor.

(please note his leg, wrapped around the bar stool)

He got passed around from grandparent to grandparent, aunt to cousin, and he charmed them all. The only one remaining uncharmed? Aunt Grace, in a distant land called "Texas". We miss you, Grace!

We were reminded today of how abundantly God has blessed us, and we are so thankful for Jesus' resurrection, which sets us free.
Happy Easter!

April 3

Today, Chris prepared the ground for our raised vegetable garden.

I was inside, preparing the food for Easter lunch.

Caleb decided to keep Daddy company. To keep Caleb occupied, I gave him a carrot.

It was great fun.

That carrot kept him entertained for 20 solid minutes, until he dropped it on the patio.
Who knew?

April 2

Today, Caleb woke up and decided he was finally going to do some pre-crawling things.

It's like he learned in his sleep how to support himself on his hands and lift his bottom up in the air! Did one of you sneak into his bedroom last night and tell him how to do it?

Also...
It's almost Easter!
(This is a cute little bunny outfit Chris' mom got for Caleb before he was born. There's also a bunny on the bottom of the little hotpants. I'm so thankful it's warm enough that he can wear it!)

April 1

I was much too busy and tired today to come up with any pranks. Sorry.

However, I think we might have a new tradition in the making...

If the cow looks familiar, it's because you saw it on St. Patrick's Day.

The owners of the cow (it's fake, in case you were wondering) apparently dress it for every holiday.
Updated: I just found this story about the cow's owners (or cowners, if you will) on Francis Howell North's student website. Check it out!

Maybe by the end of the year, we'll have a year's worth of Caleb+Cow photos and we can make a calendar for the people who own the cow.

Unfortunately, our friends Cooper and Sara, who started the tradition with us, weren't able to join us for today's photos.

Fortunately, though, Caleb seems to like the Easter Cow! more than he liked the Caleb-sized leprechaun.

(By the way, as we headed back to our car after taking these photos, a mom and her teenage daughter pulled their car up behind our car. They were driving down the busy road the cow faces, saw us taking photos, and decided they needed photos, too! I think we're starting a trend.)
