July 26

Today was supposed to be less sweltering than normal, so we joined Jill and her girls at the zoo. We got there bright and early, and had such a good time!

Lily's favorite friend, Naomi, had a specific list of animals she wanted to see. Among them was the hippo, and today we lucked out: the kids got uncrowded, super close-up views of hippos!
Sweet Eli didn't know what to think. He loved it all!

Look how close it is! The kids were delighted!

And look at Eli's sweet little face. I love that boy.

The hippo swam laps past us, again and again.
So much fun!

That's Naomi in the pink hat, and Lily in the cute little dress.
And a hippo in the water.

Jill has a zoo membership, and she graciously shared her train passes with us. Half of my children have never ridden the zoo train because it costs a lot of money to buy train tickets for a family of 6!
Eli loved  the train, and was devastated when we had to get off.

Caleb and Daisy rode in the seat in front of me. It is life-altering to have children old/responsible enough that I don't have to worry about them sitting in their own seat. We are entering a new stage of parenting, people.
(Also, I have no explanation for Daisy's face.)

I asked Lily and Naomi to scoot together and snuggle for a picture, and they did this. These girls are the cutest together!

This was how I wore Eli on the train. It was my first time using my Shades of Blue wrap in a Traditional Sling Carry, and though it may not be pretty, I rocked that slip knot! I think it's largely due to some coaching I got from Amber...
Also, I love that Eli is playing with my mama metal necklace. I love it so much, and wear it almost every day. I'm so glad I had it made!

Time to see the monkeys! The kids got an up-close view of chimpanzees eating their own poop, which was really exciting.

This sweet baby was unhappy about a lot of things today. Mostly, he wanted to be down and exploring on his own two feet, at his own pace. Anytime I tried to wrap him or put him in the stroller, he flipped out. Toddlerhood is coming! Now that he is mobile and independent, I am starting to experience how hard it is to keep track of four children in one place. The Children's Zoo was pretty stressful. Normally I have Eli on me all the time, so I only have to look out for three. Four is a whole new ballgame.

We ended our visit with a trip to the carousel, courtesy of Jill's zoo membership. The kids were thrilled!
At naptime, Lily told me that riding on the carousel with Naomi was the best part of her day.

Daisy's hair is wet from a cooling mist fan, not from sweat. Really.

And my only explanation for Eli's rosy cheeks is that it ended being just as hot as any other July day today. Don't worry, Mom, it's not sunburn, and I gave him plenty of water to drink. He's fine now.
But look! Eli is riding his own carousel animal for the very first time! What a big boy! And you can't see it behind him, but brave Caleb chose to ride an animal that moved up and down, instead of on the bench or a stationary animal, like he used to.

And then it was time to go. I had pushed our BOB full of children up a steep ramp to get to the exit when Caleb reminded me that I told him we would stop and see the elephant statue before we left. I really didn't want to do the ramp again, and Daisy was done, and it was HOT, but I remembered that yesterday I didn't keep my word to Caleb. So instead, I chose to keep my word today. We said goodbye to Jill and her girls, and went back to the  elephant.

There! My four grouchy duckies.

Do you remember what they looked like here almost exactly a year ago?

And here's today!
(DSLR photo above, iPhone photo below.)
Isn't it amazing how much they've changed in a year? OK, mostly it's Eli that has changed. But whatever.

Completely unrelated: a video of Eli from a few days ago, right after he woke up from his nap. Normally when I ask him how old he is, he holds up a hand and says, "FWEE!" Yes, he thinks he's three. This day I tried to video it, but instead he tricked me and said "One." That child is a stinker!

July 24

I got a new lens today!

After hearing several people in a photography group gush about a $94 Yongnuo 35mm F2 lens, I decided to give it a shot. I've been dreaming about a $900 35mm lens for a while now, so I thought this would give me a chance to play around and see if the expensive one is worth the investment somewhere down the road. I ordered the lens on Thursday, and Amazon Prime's 2-day shipping meant it arrived... on Sunday? I'm not sure about that, but it happened. I was so pumped! I pulled the lens out of the packaging, put it on my camera, adjusted my settings, and...

*whomp, whomp*

It didn't work.

After playing for a while, I realized that it was the Auto Focus that didn't work. The lens worked perfectly in manual focus, but I don't shoot with my lenses on manual. Then I played with my Auto Focus a bit, and determined that if I set my camera on the type of AF that I don't use (AI servo, for those who care), it would work. Except that it wouldn't let me select my focus point. If I tried to choose a focus point, the lens freaked out and didn't work. Low light, day light, high aperture, low aperture, moving subject, stationary... it just didn't work correctly. After googling and discussing with other people who own the lens, I have determined that the one I got must be defective. I suppose one of the many risks you take when purchasing a $94 lens is poor quality control. Luckily, I am able to return the lens and get all of my money back. And after playing with the defective lens for 30 minutes, I think I like it enough that I'm willing to gamble and purchase another and see what happens.
(The other downside to purchasing a $94 lens from Amazon: no warranty. The manufacturer only warranties purchases made from its website, which doesn't have the lens in stock. So I have to return my defective lens and re-purchase a new one. Thank goodness for free 2 (-ish) day shipping!)

So. Here are the pictures I took with my defective Yongnuo 35mm F2 lens:

Daisy got a new haircut and a new dress. She was feeling pretty fabulous today. Can you tell?

Sweet girl. I don't even care that the focus is off and she's a little bit green. Look at that smile!

Caleb (who is also out of focus) got a new linen shirt. Thank you, Old Navy clearance!

After cooperating nicely for my pictures, Caleb brought his water gun to me and asked me to take a few more pictures. He had some very specific ideas in mind of how he should pose.

This is his fierce face.

Serious face.

Meanwhile, Eli was playing at Caleb's feet.
Hi, cutie pie!

What a handsome boy!

RAAAAHHH!

So. The lens was a bust, but I'll try again. Also, did I mention that I have finally earned enough from my photography business to upgrade my camera? My new, full-frame camera (Canon 6D) should arrive sometime this week. I'm curious to see how different a 35mm lens would look on a full-frame body vs. my current crop sensor. I suppose I'll just have to experiment with my 50mm lens instead.

July 22

Only cell phone pictures today. Eli did not vomit anymore, which makes me cross my fingers and hope that last night was just a fluke, and that a stomach bug is not about to ravage its way through my family.

The haircutting stuff was still out from Chris' hair cut last night, so while I edited pictures at the computer, Caleb combed my hair and put a clip in it.
It was actually very sweet, and he was so proud of his handiwork that he asked me to take a picture of it and send it to Daddy. In the past day and a half, both Caleb and Daisy have spent time brushing/combing my hair. None of my children have ever done this before, but I think it's really sweet! Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that we watched Tangled for the first time last week?

I also found the time to wash and reassemble Eli's car seat, but I didn't get around to re-installing int in the van. Eli noticed, and suddenly the boy who never wants to be buckled into his car seat had a new favorite seat in the house.
He's cute, isn't he? He kept pointing to the buckle and saying, "Buh! Buh!" which I'm fairly confident means "Buckle!" as in, "Get over here, Woman, and buckle me in!"

Funny kid.

I did eventually get the seat installed, though, because after naps we headed out to Emily and Billy's house to celebrate Jace's third birthday. Sadly, I have no pictures of that, but it was a lot of fun!

July 21

Another day, another photo of the kids playing with one of Lily's new birthday gifts.
Auntie Grace sent Play-Doh, and the kids were pumped to open the boxes and play with it. Even Eli participated, and I am 63% confident that he didn't eat any.

I love when they are all this happy, and I don't have to do anything.
#lazymom

Eli couldn't really figure the Play-Doh out, but he could tell that the big kids thought it was awesome, so he kept trying.

This girl can be really cute sometimes!

I don't know why Lily is standing on a chair. Perhaps her enthusiasm for Play-Doh overwhelmed her. (Don't worry, Mom. She's fine. She didn't fall.)

Caleb is wearing the t-shirt he made for "Bring a Cow" day at swim team.

He made a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone.

And a teeny-tiny, baby ice cream cone.

After we put the Play-Doh away, I gave Caleb and Daisy both haircuts. They both asked to have their hair cut, and Lily insisted on being in my wrap the whole time. I can't remember now what Eli was doing; probably playing happily because that's what he does. He is a good baby. I also ended up cutting Chris' hair tonight, which means half of my family had their hair cut by me today.

But back to ice cream. After dinner tonight we headed out to Main Street for some ice cream. Actually, we headed out there to pick up Chris' bike and the front tire from our BOB, which both needed repairs. While we were there, we decided to get some ice cream.

We had a great plan: Chris would pick up the bike and tire, I would take the kids to the ice cream shop, he would meet us there, and he and Caleb would bike home. It was perfect.

And then? Just after I dropped Chris off at the bike shop and was about to pull away? Caleb and Daisy began shouting from the back seat, "MOMMY! ELI THREW UP!"
Dubious, I looked in my rearview mirror and witnessed Eli calmly emptying the contents of his stomach all over his car seat.

I mean, really. Kids throwing up is awful. But throwing up in the car seat? When you're away from home and forgot the diaper bag? When you still have to finish what you're doing and drive home? When your car seat must be completely uninstalled to wash the cover?

It's the worst.

So I stopped the car, pulled Eli out of his seat and set him on a towel in the grass, and used tissues to scoop as much of the vomit out of the seat as I could. The kid had eaten a hearty dinner, so it was quite the task. Then I did what I could to clean him up. I was thankful that I always keep some big plastic bags and spare towels in my van, along with tissues and Handi-wipes. It made the task much easier since I didn't have the diaper bag.

And then?

We went to get ice cream. Because 3/4 of the children were not actively vomiting, but I can guarantee that if we skipped the promised treat, 4/4 of them would be actively screaming.

Yum. Ice cream. Eli is naked because vomit. And look at how short Caleb's hair is now! He's happy, because now his hair won't get in his eyes when he swims. Even though swim team is over for the season. Whatever.

And then the big boys went off on their bike ride home, which is about 9 miles. I prepared to walk the kids back to the vomit-smelling van, but Daisy wanted to stop at the gazebo. At first I said no, but then I remembered how magical the gazebo felt to me when I was a child, so I wheeled our BOB around and said yes.

It's a bad picture, but it shows two very happy girls in two very strange outfits. Whatever.

And then I drove the children home and gave them all baths and cleaned vomit while Chris and Caleb biked home, then stopped at the neighborhood pool and jumped in with all of their clothes on.

I wasn't jealous at all.

July 20

Today Amber and two of her five children came over bright and early for a play date. We were afraid it was going to be obnoxiously hot, so we stayed at my house instead of venturing out to a park. It ended up being a good choice, because not long after they arrived, the rain started falling. We all went out on the porch to watch the rain, and one thing led to another, and soon this happened:
It was THE. CUTEST. THING. EVER.

He was curious at first, and soon he loved it!

Look at him go! It still surprises me that Eli is officially a walker.

Splashing in the puddles!

I don't remember why Daisy wasn't in any of these pictures, but she definitely participated in the rain splashing. The kids were all really interested in the gutter on the side of the road. We live at the bottom of a hill, right before the storm sewer, so rainstorms create gushing rivers on the side of the road.

I'm not sure if Caleb and Edie were fishing, but I can tell you that Edie saw Caleb with a stick and immediately ran to find one of her own. Girl knows a good thing when she sees it!

Meanwhile, Eli followed Gussie up and down the sidewalk.

Look at how Eli is watching Gussie splash. You can almost see the wheels turning in his head as he figures out how to make big splashes.

He is so pleased with himself!

Princess Lily, naked Edie, and swimsuit-clad Caleb. I love these kids.

After our friends left, the kids played happily with Lily's new birthday toys.
This little house with doorbells and locking doors is a particular favorite for all four kids.

Lily was pretending to sleep with her new babies here; she even asked me to go get her pinky out of her room so that she could snuggle them. Funny girl!
