August 8

Hmm. Today was a rollercoaster.

You know how we've been doing all kinds of tests to determine if there's anything wrong with Daisy? Well, today was the doozy test that we've been putting off for a while - a chloride sweat test to rule out cystic fibrosis. We had a 9:00 appointment at the big hospital downtown, and my mom and Ryan graciously agreed to come over and spend the morning with Caleb so that I could focus on keeping Daisy happy.

At 9:00, we signed in for our appointment. At 9:20, the receptionist finally got to us. She informed me that Daisy's doctor had never sent in the lab orders for the sweat test. No orders = no test. I called the doctor to have them verbally order the test, but the office was closed. At 9:30 on a Wednesday morning. They didn't open until noon.

At this point I was livid. Really? We had come all the way out there, and the doctor couldn't even call in the order? And they weren't open? I was ready to cry with frustration.

I called the after-hours exchange, but had to leave a message. I waited around for a while, but then I gave up. At 9:45, when we were already on the road home, the exchange nurse called me back. I explained the situation, and she said she'd see what she could do. In a matter of thirty minutes, she called Daisy's doc repeatedly until she got a response, called me, called the big hospital, called me, faxed in a lab order, called the big hospital to make sure it went through, and called me back with all of the details. I have no doubt that God put that woman on the exchange that day, because she was such a blessing to me. Not only did she take care of everything with incredible thoroughness, but she was kind, reassuring, and had even been through a very similar situation with her own daughter. What a blessing it was to hear words of encouragement from someone with knowledge and experience!

So Daisy and I went back to the big hospital and did the sweat test. It was pretty bad. They strapped some big electrodes to one of her arms and zapped it for five minutes to stimulate her sweat glands. Then they removed the electrodes, taped gauze over the zapped area, and repeated the process on the other arm.

On the first arm, Daisy cried. Luckily, I was prepared: I pulled up my shirt and nursed her until she was calm.   On her other arm, Daisy wasn't so easily assuaged. She screamed and screamed until the tech got out a roll of cat stickers. Then Daisy was happy as could be!

After they were done zapping her, we had to wait thirty minutes while the gauze absorbed all of her sweat. Luckily, the hospital is a haven for children, so we found plenty to entertain us. She loved the aquarium, but she was really captivated by this contraption:

It was a Rube-Goldberg type machine with balls that rolled and flipped and pinged. She loved it. Sorry for the blurry photo, but I only had my cell phone. See her sweet Wonder Woman wrist guards, though? That was the tape that held the gauze in place.

The rest of the test wasn't that big of a deal (except when the tech removed the gauze and commented that it looked dry, and we may have to repeat the test another day if they didn't collect enough sweat. Then, I nearly lost it. But there was enough sweat, so heads didn't roll.), and we left the hospital at noon and were home by 12:30, four hours after we left for our appointment. Ugh. But babygirl was sound asleep, so everything was ok.

As I was making dinner tonight, the doctor called: Daisy's test was negative. She does NOT have cystic fibrosis. Praise the Lord. Now the question is, what is causing her to be so skinny and sick and have such weird diapers?

Regardless, we decided to celebrate by grilling burgers at the pool. We invited my mom, Emily, Ryan, and Max to join us.

Fun was had by all!

Daisy is totally into swimming.
(psst...  remember this picture, from nearly a year ago?)

Caleb found a toy semi truck, and spent the whole time driving it around the water.

Also, a recent discovery about Daisy:
the gross motor delay has been masking the fact that she is a climber.
Lord help me. I have a climber.

Also, she is cruising now! Big girl! So what if stupid BabyCenter says that 90% of her peers are walking by now. When she walks, she will walk with style!

Max is suspicious of the water and suspicious of me. Or maybe it's my camera he's suspicious of, not me?

Ryan played and played with the kiddos. He's so good with them, and they adore him!

The kids ate their dinner picnic-style, on the ground. Everything is better picnic-style!

Max didn't want to swim, but was happy to lounge poolside.

It's official: Ryan is Daisy's favorite. She preferred him over Grandma, Daddy, and even me!

After dinner, the big boys had a diving contest.
Chris had some good moves,

but Ryan's boldness blew Chris out of the water.

Daisy and Grandma laughed at the boys.

Daisy also taught Grandma her favorite game, called, "Hi, Plane!"

Eventually, Grandma even persuaded Max to join in the pool fun.
What a great day!

August 6

What a busy, busy day!

This morning I had a hankering to have an adventure. I asked Caleb, "Do you want to go somewhere?" He responded, "Yes. I want to go to I-wa. Is Grandma there?" I was thinking more along the lines of going to a playground, so I had to veto the trip to Iowa. (My parents drove there this weekend for Dad's class reunion, and Caleb remembered me mentioning that. Funny boy.)

I ended up taking them to a park that my friend Amber and her son, Andrew suggested. It was a definite winner, full of shady trees, child-friendly playground equipment (Daisy even scooted all the way up one of the climbers!), a pond with a fountain, and horses! Sadly, this is the only picture I took:
Caleb really likes ponds and fountains.
Daisy really likes horses. This girl and her love for animals - she's going to be trouble!

While both kids napped, I talked to my mom and realized that we were supposed to celebrate Jenny's birthday today. So I hopped on the phone, arranged dinner plans with the fam, then started baking cupcakes. While I baked, I called Daisy's doctor to schedule a test, then the hospital, then my mom... I was a master multi-tasker.

These kids are also multi-taskers.Please note that Caleb is licking a beater and a sucker at the same time. Sometimes I get so busy that my rules fly out the window.

Daisy knows she shouldn't be getting into the eggs!

While I frosted the cupcakes, Caleb "washed dishes" in the sink and Daisy grabbed a soapy rag, stood on the counter, and "washed" my window. I'm pretty sure their washing left me with an even bigger mess, but they were really pleased with themselves.

We finished the cupcakes with no time to spare, and hurried off to a Mexican restaurant to celebrate my baby sister's 30th birthday.
Happy birthday, Jenny!

Max loves his brother, but hates getting his picture taken!

Caleb is used to it by now. Look at that grin!

After dinner, Jenny opened up the cupcakes we made for her. Clearly, she was impressed.
Also, please note a happy Max in the background.

Caleb gave Jenny birthday kisses.
Do you see all of the delighted diners in the background? They seemed to enjoy the adorableness, too.

And then I failed as a mother. I'll blame it on the margaritas, but somehow Caleb ended up eating a cupcake AND a sucker at the same time. And that's in addition to the beater and sucker he had just a few hours before. But at least it kept him from fussing like his cousin did!

August 5

While Chris and Caleb went to church today, Daisy and I stayed home and had girl time. She is just now over the cold she got two weeks ago, and I need some time to recover before taking the risk of exposing her to germs again.

So we stayed home.
We ate.
Played.
Went for a walk.
Played on the front porch.
I worked on replacing the tabs on her diapers while she scooted around.

And then she was so cute that I couldn't stand it anymore and had to run inside to get my camera.
She is so pleased with herself every time she climbs up on this little bench!
(I keep meaning to refinish it, but its current patina has a nice charm, don't you think?)

Then I asked, "How big is Daisy?"
Oh! She knows this!

Soooooo big!

I love this kid.

She waved at every single walker, runner, and dog that passed our house. Each time, she flapped her little hand and shouted, "Bah-bah!"

Our girl time was good.

Then the boys came home, and Caleb had a pocket full of mints from church. Specifically, he had three mints in his pocket. Chris saw him grabbing them at church and made him put them back. But a few minutes later, he sadly told Daddy that he was trying to save the mints for Mommy and Daisy, and Chris marched him right back to the mint table to grab some for us.

At lunch, we played, "How big is Daisy?" again. Caleb wanted to get in the game, though, so he initiated a round of, "How pretty is Mommy?", followed quickly by a round of, "How handsome is Daddy?" By dinner, he had upgraded Daddy to, "How smart and handsome is Daddy?"

Our little boy. He's a keeper.

August 4

Today we went to a sno-cone birthday celebration for this handsome little man:
Though Caleb turned three right after our Caleb's third birthday, he waited to celebrate until his grandparents were in town.

This celebration was worth the wait: sno-cones and swimming and cupcakes that looked like ice cream cones meant that our Caleb was in heaven!

The two Calebs are so funny to watch together!

They clearly enjoy each others' company, which makes complete sense: They have nearly the same birthday, the same name, and the same interests (Cars the movie, Hot Wheels, Jesus, and baseball). They have baby sisters who are nearly the same age, and parents who are remarkably similar, too. How funny!

Our neighbor, Terry, is the other Caleb's great-uncle, so he was at the party making balloon animals for all of the kids. Our Caleb was beyond delighted when Terry made him a balloon sword.

Though she doesn't look it here, Daisy really enjoyed the party, too. Can you believe she's fifteen months old today? The girl is really growing up: She now has six teeth - four on top, two on bottom, stands all the time and is working to stand independently, is suddenly Miss Independent, and is learning new words every day. Tonight at dinner I was humming "Mahnah mahnah" (click the link - it's a Muppet song that will make you chuckle) and Daisy started singing along! I would sing, "Doo doo, doo doo-doo" and Daisy chimed in with, "Mahnah manah!" every time.

She's also getting taller. I was nursing her this morning and I realized that she suddenly has long, gangly toddler legs (even though she isn't walking yet). She is definitely more toddler now, and less baby. What fun!

Now if only she would toddle...

August 3

Today was an exciting day for us.

Standing tall in our back yard was a sickly, ugly blue spruce that desperately needed to be taken down. It was in poor shape, and it was in just the right place that a good storm could knock it over onto our power lines or our roof. Unfortunately, tree removal has been low on our budgeted priorities list. Luckily, our neighbor's niece's father-in-law (did you catch that?), who lives in Canada, happens to love cutting down trees. He is in town this week, so he and his son (our friend, Dan) came over this afternoon to remove that sad old tree.

How about that? Expert tree-removal, all the way from Canada? We're pretty fancy!

Caleb napped while the men worked, but Daisy was interested.
At least, she was until they broke out the chain saw. She did well for a while, but then she scooted inside to the safety of the air-conditioned living room.

She wasn't content to just sit in there, though; she wanted to know what was going on, albeit from a safe distance. She sat in the doorway and watched the guys work their magic.

While his father hacked away with the chain saw, Dan pulled on the tree with a rope to keep it from crashing into the house or power lines.

Mission accomplished! The proud men with their felled tree.
I can't even begin to describe how much I appreciate their hard work!

Speaking of hard work...
Right after I posted yesterday's blog, Amber sent me a message. She had already gone through all of our pictures. That woman is a machine.

She got some really great pictures; here is a peek at some of my favorites.

This one wins the title of "All-Around Favorite". Love it!

My handsome boy. He adores Amber.

My sweet girl. She was in a tree.

This is pretty typical of our family. The kids are silly, and we are happy.

I love, love, love this one, too. Daisy randomly decided to give me a big hug.

And then we turned it into a family hug. I know it's cheesy, but we have family hugs quite a bit. We call them "hug sandwiches". Can you see that the kids are even in on the game? Daisy has her arm wrapped around Daddy, and Caleb is holding onto his sister. Love it!

How about some parallel shots?

Here's us at our wedding:

and ten years later:

Us at our wedding:

and ten years later:

Pretty cool, huh?

Also, here are a few more shots of our tree:
Chris almost ignored this bucket of flowers hanging in a tree.

It's little now, but imagine how mighty it will be in fifteen years, on our 25th anniversary!
(Behind us is the gazebo where we were married. What fun!)

Thank you so, so much to Amber for these lovely pictures!

August 2

Ten years ago, on a warm (alright, HOT), breezy evening, Chris and I were married. Outside.

TEN YEARS ago.

If not for the two kids, two homes, one grouchy cat, and myriad adventures we have to show for it, I wouldn't believe it was possible.

We were just babies when we married - Chris turned twenty-one the week before our wedding, and neither of us had ever lived outside of our parents' home or a college dorm. We had no idea what we were doing, but what a fun adventure it's been!

God has provided for us and blessed us in so many ways these past ten years.

The past few years, we've been working to build an anniversary tradition of going back to the park where we were married and taking family pictures. Until now, it's just been me and my tripod.
Here's last year
But because this is a milestone anniversary, we decided to go ahead and hire a photographer. Except that all of the photographers we liked were either unavailable or absurdly expensive.

Luckily, I have some really fantastic friends who are also fantastic photographers. Not one, but TWO of them stepped forward and volunteered their services for our anniversary picnic. Amber, who is 38 weeks pregnant, ended up driving 45 minutes (or was it an hour?) to come take our pictures. It was especially sweet that she took our pictures today because she was also the matron of honor at our wedding.

While Amber looks for time to sort through the pictures that filled her memory card and also care for her three children while being THIRTY EIGHT WEEKS PREGNANT (she's a little busy), I have a few pictures I snapped after our little photo shoot. (Updated: you can see Amber's pictures from today at the end of this post! They're beautiful!)

Chris and Daisy, enjoying our picnic of fruit and muffins. They're sitting on a quilt that Chris' grandma made for us as a wedding gift.

My gift to Chris was a tree.

Really. I had the city parks department plant a tree near the gazebo where we were married, with a little plaque commemorating the event. To draw his attention to it, my mom went to the park before work this morning and hung this bucket of daisies (one of the same buckets that lined the aisle when we were married) from the tree. I thought for sure he'd notice a random tree with a pail full of daisies - just like our wedding decorations - and check it out.

Chris almost missed it. He said, "Oh, look. Daisies." and then kept walking. After a little prodding from me, he went over to check it out and saw the note on the bucket and the plaque in the ground.

It was a silly, but fun, thing.

Chris'  gift to me was, appropriately enough, also related to the park. He had a local artist paint a scene from our wedding in an Impressionist style. It featured us, the pond, the gazebo, and the lovely park. What a thoughtful man!

Enjoying our picnic.

This picture makes my heart melt.
It's only been ten years, but our park has changed so much during that time! Those rocks and flowers weren't there when we were married.

Our boy, lounging in the shade.

Our Daisy, checking out the daisies. (Did you realize we had daisies at our wedding? One of the many reasons we love Daisy's name so much.)

I am in love with these kids.
I just tucked Caleb into bed, and I asked him what his favorite part of the day was. Without any hesitation, he replied, "The park!"

They're both sniffing the daisies. Funny kids.

I'll share Amber's pictures as soon as she gets through them (no rush, dear!). But I'm sure it's pretty clear from these that we had a really great tenth anniversary. Here's to many more to come!
